I know a major concern for most people around the world right now is climate change. At least, I hope it is.

Here are some facts from the World Meteorological Organization (https://wmo.int):

  • "80% chance that at least one of the next five years will exceed 2024 as the warmest on record
  • 86% chance that at least one of next five years will be more than 1.5°C above the 1850-1900 average
  • 70% chance that 5-year average warming for 2025-2029 will be more than 1.5 °C
  • Long-term warming (averaged over decades) remains below 1.5°C
  • Arctic warming predicted to continue to outstrip global average
  • Precipitation patterns have big regional variations"

Just reading these will fill many with dread. So much so that the term 'climate anxiety' has been created. A large part of this may be due to the powerlessness felt in the face of such a large scale crisis. I know everyone who's reading this has heard "take shorter showers; recycle; watch your carbon footprint". Fun fact!: the term carbon footprint was actually created by an ad campaign for the oil giant, BP in the 2000's. How strange...

Actually, it's not. Imagine you're the CEO of a massive oil conglomerate. You notice that people are starting to realize that burning fossil fuels might not be the healthiest for our planet. Ugh, so annoying! How do you turn their attention away from your company? I'll tell you. Blame poor and middle class people! Whew, crisis averted.

Despite the fact that just 100 companies are responsible for more than 70% of global CO2 emissions, the responsibility of the planet's wellbeing is now on regular people's shoulders. So, how could we have any power when our actions aren't the cause anyway?

Luckily for you, that's exactly what this blog is about! So stay tuned and subscribe for a lot of fun and interesting ways to help our planet. We just have one, after all!
